sept nuits à paris: an exploration of yoga, culture and self
september 20 to 27, 2018
Yoga + Paris. 'Nuf said -- but I'll say more because I'm too excited not to...
This retreat is born from my desire to share, jointly, my two most favorite things in life: yoga and living another language.
Yoga is a study of the Self. We use the asana practice as an opportunity to cultivate evenness of mind in comfort and discomfort -- to practice staying present, focused and engaged even when we feel challenged and uncomfortable. It helps us live life differently and see the world through another lens. Language and cultural immersion does the same thing.
I believe that language fundamentally shapes one's experience in any given moment. The words we use, how we communicate, is core to how we engage with others in this life. For me, travel, especially in a foreign language, goes far beyond being a tourist. It is an opportunity to try on different or hidden sides of self, to practice being uncomfortable, and to discover and adapt to new territory. It is about embracing a place's social norms and embodying its cultural nuances in a way that can't be accessed except through language. Doing so, the culture becomes a part of me and I, a part of it. It is about getting lost and then finding myself, again and again. In that, it is a practice of yoga -- an exploration of self.
I have been carrying the global citizenship flag since I was young. I spent my summers attending and then working at language immersion camps, where cross-cultural understanding was the ultimate goal and outcome. I've spent many years living abroad. In recent years, I facilitated local, insiders' experiences as a field producer and translator for National Geographic and PBS. This work only reinforced the yogic teaching of oneness -- of seeing oneself in the other, and the other in oneself. Here, for the first time, I am overtly framing language and cultural immersion within the context of yoga and creating an offering of my own.
Within the container of this retreat, you will dive deeply into your asana practice. You will wine and dine. You will visit historic sites and have plenty of time to stroll and shop and museum hop and eat baguettes. And you will se poser la question "Who am I en français?" as you wander through the dreamy Parisian streets that, for countless generations, have served as the muse creatives who arrive in the City of Lights hoping to find themselves through the process of getting lost.
UPDATE: By popular demand, this retreat is now open to ALL!
L'hébergement (The lodging):
You will spend seven nights at the beautiful Maison Pierre Chanzy, a boutique Bed & Breakfast located in the 11th arrondissement. The neighborhood, full of cafés and artists, is a favorite of Parisians; is situated in the heart of the city (easily walkable/bike-able/métro-able to the attractions) yet outside the bustle of tourist traffic, and as such feels très parisien.
UPDATE: If you wish to have alternative accommodations, I am happy to help arrange a nearby Airbnb for you. Message me for details.
Yoga and meditation will be offered each day in English by moi. And bien sûr, you will also have opportunities to practice asana en français.
Du matin: Morning practices will be held daily at a nearby studio. Guided meditation will be offered, followed by nourishing and invigorating vinyasa classes.
Après-midi: Afternoon workshops will help you refine your standing poses, backbends and hip openers and build towards arm balances and inversions. They will also give you an opportunity to blow up your Instagram feed, as these workshops will be held in different iconic locations around the city.
The entire résidence, with a lovely, traditional kitchen, living and dining area, will be ours for the week. You can choose to have a room to yourself (SOLD OUT) or share a room with another yogini (twin bed). All bathrooms are shared; it's Paris, after all.
You will be served delicious Parisian breakfasts each morning. Fresh fruit and yogurt and cheeses and jams and café and thé and, of course, fresh baguettes and croissants and pain au chocolat and other deliciousness from different bakeries will be provided.
You will enjoy gourmet French cuisine at favorite Parisian restaurants for our group arrival and departure dinners, and will learn to cook some French fare in a private cooking class-and-dinner just for our group. For other meals, you will be free to explore the city's culinary side as you desire, or if you prefer, pick up some spécialités at a local market to prepare back at the Maison. A simple wine + baguette picnic along the Seine is always endorsed.
You will visit the palace and gardens of Versailles and tour of the city by night down the Seine. I will serve as your personal concierge to help you curate the Parisian experience you most desire. You will receive personalized maps and neighborhood guides and the necessary tools and support to help you navigate the city as you journey through your inner landscape.
This is a trip for YOU. It is an opportunity to seek and unleash. To practice pushing your edges of comfort. To lose yourself and find yourself again -- and, perhaps, anew. Allons-y!
